Buying a used BMW 3 Series F30 (2012–2019)
The F30 3 Series is the default used premium saloon, and prices now start temptingly low. But cheap BMWs can be expensive BMWs — the difference is in the history file and a handful of known weak points.
Common problems to know about
01Diesel timing chain wear (N47/B47)
The N47 diesel (earlier cars) is infamous for timing chain wear — and the chain sits at the back of the engine, making replacement a huge job. A diesel-like rattle or whine from the rear of the engine is the warning. Later B47 engines improved but still need good oil history.
02EGR cooler recall (diesels)
Diesel models were recalled for EGR coolers that could leak and, in extreme cases, cause fires. Confirm the recall work was completed — a dealer can check by VIN, and so can our report.
03Turbo actuator and boost faults
Sluggish response, limp mode or whistling can point to turbo actuator wear on higher-mileage diesels.
04Oil leaks
Rocker cover and oil filter housing gaskets weep with age. Look for oil residue down the front and sides of the engine.
05Suspension and run-flat wear
Worn front control arm bushes and rear shock mounts cause knocks. Run-flat tyres wear fast and cost more — check remaining tread on all four.

Common advisories: brake discs, control arm bushes, and tyres. A string of oil leak advisories that never got fixed tells you how the car was maintained.

- EGR recall completion
- Oil leaks around rocker cover and filter housing
- Knocks from suspension on poor roads
- Matching, decent-brand tyres — cheap ditchfinders signal cost-cutting
Questions to ask the seller
- Full BMW or specialist history? Oil change intervals?
- Has the timing chain ever been inspected or replaced?
- EGR recall done — any paperwork?
- Has it been remapped or used for towing?
Price notes
The gap between a £7k F30 and a £10k F30 is usually the history file. The expensive one is very often the cheaper car over three years.
