Buying a used Fiat 500 (2008–2020)
The 500 is bought with the heart, and there's nothing wrong with that — it's a charming city car. But many led hard urban lives with minimal maintenance, so the head needs to run these checks before the heart signs anything.
Common problems to know about
01Dualogic automated-manual gearbox
The clunky robotised manual is the 500's worst feature: jerky shifts, hesitation, actuator and clutch failures. If you need an automatic, test it exhaustively when cold and in traffic — many buyers end up wishing they'd bought the manual.
02TwinAir 0.9 oil consumption
The characterful two-cylinder uses oil as part of its personality. Check the level, insist on evidence of frequent oil changes, and walk away from neglected examples.
03Snapped coil springs and suspension wear
Front springs snap regularly — look at the MOT history and eyeball each corner. Drop links and bushes wear fast on city streets.
04Exhaust flexi-pipe and clutch wear
The exhaust's flexible section fails (blowing noise from underneath), and stop-start driving wears clutches — check the bite point.
05Electrical and trim niggles
City steering mode faults, warning lights, window regulators and rattly trim are common. Blue&Me / Uconnect systems can be temperamental.
MOT history: what to look for
The classic 500 MOT record features coil springs, tyres, brakes and the odd emissions advisory. Repeated corrosion advisories on the oldest cars deserve a proper underneath look.

Price notes
Huge supply means you can be fussy. Pay a little more for a cherished low-owner manual; heavily-used examples are cheap for a reason and rarely stay cheap to own.
