Buying a used Volkswagen Golf Mk7 (2013–2020)

The Mk7 Golf is one of the most complete used buys of its era — refined, well built and holding value stubbornly. It's dependable overall, but the automatic gearbox and a few engine details deserve attention.

Quick verdictAn excellent used car. Prioritise service history over mileage, test any DSG automatic thoroughly, and you'll struggle to go far wrong.

Common problems to know about

01DSG (DQ200) mechatronic failures

The 7-speed dry-clutch DSG fitted to smaller engines can suffer mechatronic unit failure — jerky shifts, hesitation, or warning lights. Repairs run into four figures. Test from cold and in traffic; smooth, prompt shifts are what you want.

021.4 TSI water pump and thermostat

Plastic water pump/thermostat housings weep coolant. Look for dried coolant residue around the pump area and check the level.

03Timing chain on early small TSI engines

Some earlier TSI units had timing chain tensioner issues — a rattle on cold start is the warning sign. Later belts/updated chains are fine.

04Sunroof and door drainage

Blocked drains can leak water into the cabin. Lift carpets and check the spare wheel well for damp.

05Infotainment and electronics

Screens can freeze or reboot; adaptive cruise and sensors occasionally fault. Test every function — repairs are pricey at VW rates.

MOT history: what to look for

Golfs generally MOT well. Watch for advisories on front suspension arms, brake wear, and tyres. On GTD/GTI models check for consumable wear from enthusiastic use.

Price notes

Golfs carry a price premium over rivals. A SEAT Leon or Skoda Octavia is the same car underneath for less — worth knowing as a negotiating point.
