Buying a used Honda Civic (2012–2021 (9th & 10th gen))

The Civic pairs Honda's engineering reputation with more interesting design than most rivals. Both generations here are fundamentally reliable; the checklist below is short but worth following.

Quick verdictA safe, satisfying used buy. Check the AC works, watch oil level on the 1.0 turbo, and favour cars with unbroken history.

Common problems to know about

01Air-con condenser failures (10th gen)

The 2017-on car had a known weak AC condenser — stone damage kills them. Test that the air con blows genuinely cold; Honda extended warranty coverage on many cars.

021.0 VTEC Turbo oil dilution

Short cold trips can let fuel dilute the oil on the 1.0 turbo. Check the oil level isn't above max and doesn't smell of petrol; regular oil changes solve it.

031.6 i-DTEC DPF care

The diesel is efficient and sturdy but still a diesel — town-only use clogs the DPF. Usual warning-light and smoke checks apply.

04Infotainment lag and Bluetooth dropouts

The touchscreen (especially 10th gen) can be laggy or crash. Annoying rather than serious — but test it.

05Rear brake and handbrake wear

Electronic parking brake models can wear rear pads quickly. Listen for grinding and check the EPB engages cleanly.

MOT history: what to look for

Strong pass rates. Typical advisories are tyres, brakes and the odd bulb. Consistent history of cheap remould tyres suggests a penny-pinching owner.

Price notes

Civics sit slightly below Golf money with better reliability stats — one of the quiet bargains of the class.
