Buying a used Toyota Yaris (2011–2020)

If you want a small car that simply refuses to break, the Yaris is the default answer — especially the hybrid. There's not much of a horror list here, so the job is mostly confirming the individual car was cared for.

Quick verdictOne of the most dependable used buys at any price. Hybrids are ideal for town use. Just verify history, hybrid battery health and that it hasn't been a neglected runabout.

Common problems to know about

01Hybrid battery condition (age, not design)

The hybrid system is extremely durable, but batteries do age. A healthy one holds charge and the engine doesn't run constantly at idle; a dealer hybrid health check is cheap reassurance.

02Water pump and auxiliary wear

On higher-mileage petrol cars, water pumps and drive belts are normal wear items — check for coolant residue and belt squeal.

03Clutch wear on manuals

Nothing unusual, but town-only cars can need clutches — standard test applies.

04Rust on older/coastal cars

Check rear arches, sills and the tailgate seam on the oldest examples.

05Neglect, not defects

The Yaris's main enemy is being run on a zero-budget by owners who skipped everything. Tyre brands, brake condition and stamped history tell the real story.

MOT history: what to look for

Yarises pass at high rates. Failures are usually consumables: tyres, brakes, bulbs, wipers. A car with repeated corrosion advisories is one to skip.

Price notes

Yarises hold value annoyingly well — that's the reliability premium. Paying it is usually rational; you get much of it back at resale.
