01Hybrid battery condition (age, not design)

On higher-mileage petrol cars, water pumps and drive belts are normal wear items — check for coolant residue and belt squeal.
03Clutch wear on manuals
Nothing unusual, but town-only cars can need clutches — standard test applies.
04Rust on older/coastal cars
Check rear arches, sills and the tailgate seam on the oldest examples.
05Neglect, not defects
The Yaris's main enemy is being run on a zero-budget by owners who skipped everything. Tyre brands, brake condition and stamped history tell the real story.

Checklist when viewing the car
- Hybrid: smooth engine start/stop cycling, EV mode works at low speed
- Service history — even independent stamps
- Coolant level and belt condition
- Rust check on arches and sills (older cars)
- Brakes not corroded from short-trip use
